Dreaming on the Outside

Dreaming on the Outside explores the relationship between the external world and inner experience. Using observed landscapes, objects and places as points of departure, Ray Mackie transforms familiar subjects into reflections on memory, identity and the search for meaning. Bringing together works developed over several years, the exhibition invites viewers to discover their own connections between the physical world and the emotions and experiences it can evoke.
About the Artist
Since settling in Nova Scotia in 1999, Ray Mackie has built a multidisciplinary artistic practice spanning painting, photography, and ceramics. A former co-founder of Lucky Rabbit Pottery in Annapolis Royal, he now divides his time between studio work and exploring the landscapes that inspire him. Drawn to the geology and rugged character of Nova Scotia’s coastline, Mackie returns repeatedly to places such as Mavillette Beach, using their distinctive forms and textures as a source of creative investigation. His work reflects a deep engagement with the natural world and the stories embedded within the landscape.
Artist Statement
The works in this exhibition reflect a long-standing interest in the relationship between the external world and inner experience. Through painting, photography, sculpture and drawing, I use observed landscapes, objects and places as starting points for personal, psychological and spiritual investigations.
The title Dreaming on the Outside reflects the idea that the physical world can sometimes serve as a mirror for thoughts, memories, emotions, and states of consciousness that are difficult to express directly. Many of the works begin with observed subjects such as marshes, weathered rock surfaces, bed frames, or crow’s nests, but over time these images take on broader symbolic meanings.
The exhibition brings together several bodies of work developed over a number of years. While the subjects vary, they share an interest in transformation, memory, identity, landscape and the search for meaning. Through these works, I hope viewers
will find their own connections and associations.
